FOR A CHANGE, TWO OF THIS YEAR’S NOMINEES ACTUALLY MADE SOME MONEY –THE #1 MONEYMAKER “AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER” & #2 “TOP GUN – MAVERICK”
In a departure from the norm, two of this year’s ten nominees for Best Picture were among the ten top moneymaker of the past year placing #1 and #2. This year’s Top earner and crowd favorite was “Avater: The Way of Water” with a $2.2844 Billion take at the box office which indicates this franchise is still a real crowd favorite with the first Avatar released in 2009 grossing $2.92 Billion and it is still the highest grossing film in history. This year’s Avatar edition made nearly 21.5 times more money at the box office then the Academy’s “Best” selection – “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Although I’m sure winning the Oscar is a great honor, I’m confident the producers of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” would gladly trade their Oscar for the extra $2.178 Billion “Avater: The Way of Water” earned. With three more Avatar editions planned for release in 2024, 2026 and 2028, their movie industry competitors can look forward to losing to the Avatar franchise at least three times in the future in at least the all-important money earned category.
Hence, as in past years in
the money spending public’s opinion it was again no contest in 2023 ….and the BEST MOVIE WINNER is, bank statements Please (drum roll), the hands down winner by a
country mile is (sorry Everything
Everywhere All at Once): “AVATAR:
THE WAY OF WATER!”
